What An Enormous Japanes Giant Hornet !!

The Asian Giant Hornet (including the subspecies Japanese Giant Hornet) is renowned as the world´s largest and most fearsome Hornet. It´s body length is approximately 50mm, with a wingspan of round about 76mm, and its stinger, which injects an extremely potent venom, is approximately 5mm in length. These outstanding creatures are nicknamed “Yak-Killers” and that’s precisely because they are capable of doing so. The Japanese Asian Hornet is the most famous killer insect of Japan, responsible for approximately 40 human deaths each year.

Each year, a single Queen Hornet rises from a winter hibernation with one solitary purpose, and that is to build a deadly army. The Queen Hornet lays thousands of eggs, which develop into larvae in about a week, and when she starts to feed this army, no-one, not even the famous praying mantis is safe. As soon as the Queen hornet has enough workers to do the killing, she will become an egg laying machine, laying hundreds of eggs each day. The workers will kill anything they can, even their smaller cousins, the Yellow Hornets. Just one of these hornets is capable of killing 40 honey bees in a minute and a few of them are capable of slaughtering 30.000 bees within an hour or two. When hunting, they can travel up to 97km in a single day at speeds of up to 40km/h. Many people consider them brutal creatures, but they are just doing what they have to do to survive…

The Giant Hornet has very few natural predators. The only threat that this creature faces come from humans. In the mountain villages of Japan, these creatures are part of the villager’s diet, being eaten as deep fried or as a hornet sashimi. In spite of the risks related with the capture of hornets, they are said to be flavorsome and a good source of protein. I find it absurd how people are capable of eating anything!!!
