The Largest one Horn Rhino on the Planet

The Indian rhinoceros or the Great One-horned Rhinoceros is a massive creature that weighs about 2200-3000 kg, but despite its weight, it can run up to 40 kilometers per hour for short periods of time. It’s the largest 1 horn rhino on the planet.

The Great One-Horned Rhinoceros
has a single horn which is present on both males and females. The horn is pure keratin, much like the matter that makes up our own fingernails. It starts to show after about 6 years of age. The Indian rhino is illegally poached for sports or for the use of its horn. Some people believe that the rhino’s horn has healing and potency properties and therefore its utilized for Traditional Chinese Medicine and other Oriental medicines, a belief that has resulted to the rhino’s mere extinction. They once wandered by the thousands in a huge area of southern Asia. In the early 1900s there were less than 200 rhinos existing in the wild. There population has increased to more or less 2500 in the last century, but even so the species is still endangered. With the aid of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the Indian and Nepalese governments have taken major steps towards Indian Rhinoceros conservation - protective reserves in Nepal and India have been made homes for this endangered creature.

The Indian rhinos are grazers, they feed mostly on grass, but they are also known to eat leaves, fruit and tender plants. During the dry season when food supplies are scares, the rhino tends to leave the protected park and consume farmer’s crops. Wandering from protected land further exposes them to poachers. Ranges try to divert the rhinos back into the park, but they must be careful because rhinos can be unpredictable and aggressive. However, dominant males are more threatening to each other when they are in mating season, these dangerous encounters can turn very bloody…
The rhino rarely attacks and usually flees from danger, it has little to fear, except from its greatest enemy which is man.

Birds Of Prey - Owls

Owls are birds of prey which are generally active during the night. These creatures have always been regarded as birds of great mystery, most likely due to their nocturnal activities, soundless flight and common screeching calls. Some people think that Owls are spooky; others say that they are wise, and I find them outstanding creatures.

There are as many as 220 to 225 existant species of owls found all over the world and they vary in a lot of different sizes. For instance the Eagle Owl that lives in Europe is known as one of the largest owls in the world, it may reach a size of 60-71 cm (28.4 in) long, whereas the Great Horned owl is one of the biggest owls in North America and the Elf Owl is one of the smallest owls in the world which is about 13.5 cm (5.3 in) long.

Owls have a flat face, a hawk-like beak and usually a noticeable circle of feathers around their forward-facing eyes. They see extremely well in the dark; however they are not capable of seeing anything clearly within a few inches of their eyes because they are far-sighted. Their distant vision, principally in dim light is extremely good. Contrary to the popular myth, Owls cannot spin their head around in circles. They are able to turn their head completely in either direction to see. These birds have well-developed ears, with flaps of skin shaping "outer ears," hidden beneath the feathers. The "ear clumps" on the heads of many owls are, in reality, feathers. The flight feathers of an Owl have special wing features which deadens the owl’s wing-beats, allowing its flight to be practically silent. The owl scoops down like a ghost and grabs its prey with no warning of attack. They feed on small mammals such as rats, insects and other birds. But there are some species of owls that are especially adapted for fishing.

Like most wildlife, owls are increasingly threatened by the loss of their natural habitat due to human activity or climate change. All owls are listed in Appendix II of the international CITES treaty (the Convention of Illegal Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora).

The Best Perfume Fragrance

I usually wear perfume everyday because in my opinion when you smell great and look good it makes you feel extremely better about yourself. I have a big collection of perfumes at home, but the one that I like and use the most is Surrender from Avon. The Scent is absolutely remarkable; it has an oriental blend of intense musk and warm amber, with a light touch of exotic florals. The scent of this amazing perfume lasts all day, giving a slight aroma which stays behind you as you walk. Another big advantage about this perfume is that compared to other big brand perfumes that have wonderful fragrances, this one is a real good bargain…

Mountain Gorilla - Midst of Extinction

The mountain gorillas are the rarest and largest of all apes; there are only about 700 of them left in the world. These creatures are however, one of the most endangered species on the planet. The reason for this is, with great sadness because of the humans which are the greatest threat to all gorilla populations. They are threatened by poaching for three main reasons: meat, capture for collection and trophies. Other reasons are due to loss of habitat and fragmentation, disease transmission from humans (e.g. Ebola virus) and armed conflict. These gentle creatures will disappear in the next few decades if no action is taken.

In order to save the gorillas from extinction, 2009 has been declared the Year of the Gorilla by the UNEP Convention on Migratory Species–CMS, the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums–WAZA and the UNESCO Great Ape Survival Partnership–GRASP. The International commity hopes to attract the attention of the public and funding agencies to the distressing state of this primate.

If you value these fragile creatures and want to help support them, you can help right away by adopting a gorilla from the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International. There are very few gorillas left in the world, the loss of just one gorilla is regarded as a tragedy...
They need all the help they can get, especially from us!!!

The Largest Land Carnivore - Polar Bear

The polar bear is recognized as the largest land carnivore species on the planet. An adult male can weigh up to 680 kilos or as much as 10 men. Polar bears can be found all through the Arctic Circle and adjacent land masses. These magnificent creatures have evolved unique features for Arctic life. Temperatures can fall to minus 40 degrees Celsius and stay that way for days or even weeks. But the polar bear is superbly equipped for such a freezing climate; the bear has a layer of blubber, of almost 10 cm thick which helps keep it warm, whereas two coats of fur help maintain body temperature. A wooly undercoat maintains the bear insulated, and of course outer hairs repel water. The white coat usually turns yellow with age.

Water is a refuge for the polar bear, its scientific name Ursus maritimus means sea bear due to the animal’s native habitat. The polar bear spends its life in the ocean and hunting primarily along the perimeter of the polar ice pack. The polar bear is an excellent swimmer; it swims in a dog-paddle fashion using its large forepaws to propel through the water. It can swim up to 6 miles per hour, and travel during long distances without rest. But it often returns to land to hunt. The polar bears most common hunting method is called still-hunting. When hunting a seal, the bear uses its well-developed sense of smell to find a seals breathing hole, and crouches nearby in silence for a seal to appear. It can detect the seals as far as 1.6km away and buried under 0.91 m of snow. Seals have to surface every 15 minutes to breathe, but they often use diverse holes. So the bear may have to wait for days for a meal to come up for air. When the seal exhales, the bear smells its breath, reaches into the hole with a forepaw, and with a heavy downward lunge, it punches through snow and ice, surprising its hidden quarry and drags it out onto the ice.

The polar bear is an extremely powerful predator. Although stereotyped as being voraciously violent, they are generally cautious in confrontations, and regularly choose to escape rather than fight. Fat polar bears hardly ever attack humans, whereas hungry polar bears are very unpredictable and are known to kill and occasionally eat humans. Running can be one of the worst reactions when encountering a polar bear, it often provokes an attack. Just one blow from its massive 30 cm paw can kill a person immediately. Being nosy animals and scavengers, polar bears explores and eats garbage where they come into contact with humans. Polar bears may attempt to eat almost anything they can find, including dangerous substances such as plastic, car batteries, hydraulic fluid, and motor oil.

Out of all the outstanding creatures on this planet, the polar bear is among the list of animals that I admire the most. Global warming is, with grave concern, a major threat to the polar bear because the habitat loss diminishes its ability to find enough food. If climate trends persist, these creatures may become completely destroyed from their range within 100 years. The polar bear has been listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act.

Eco-Sensorial Park

Pia do Urso Park which is situated near a small village in the council of Batalha – Portugal, is the first and only park in Portugal developed in particular to offer new experiences and sensations to the visually impaired. All through the magnificent trip, the sounds, shapes and fragrances awakens the senses to magical and refreshing experiences - it´s an authentic wonderland.
This awe-inspiring park has a spectacular natural landscape and a serene environment to experience and take pleasure in. It is composed by a number of different paths in which Mother Nature plays a fundamental key role. Throughout the village, the walking trails have been specially designed (wooden paths) for the visually impaired so that they can wonder around freely without the help of anyone.
There are 6 Sensory stations (Planetarium, Water Cycle Station, Jurassic Station, Music Station, Creative Station and Abstract Station) as well as historic attractions to be visited. Explicative information in Braille (method that is widely used by blind people to read and write) is also used.
According to legend, the park Pia do Urso – meaning Bear´s sinkhole in Portuguese, was given its name because of a Bear that used to travel every day up and down the mountains. Ignorant to the people around him, he would always stop at the beautiful natural sculpted sinkhole to refresh himself before carrying on with his trip.

The Beauty Of Sand Sculpture

One of the main attractions on a beach, especially for children, is playing with the sand. Building sand castles and burying someone up or burying oneself keeps the children entertained during a very long time; however, adults also find it entertaining…

Sand sculpting as an artistic form has become very popular in recent years especially in coastal beach areas. Sand art has progressed well behold simple sand castles. Sand sculpture contests involve large, complex, and extremely sophisticated constructions. Hundreds of annual competitions normally take place on a beach all over the world.

Two basic building ingredients, sand and water from the sea are needed; however, sand grains will not stick together unless the sand is reasonably fine. According to an article that I read, the perfect ration is eight parts dry sand to one part water, depending on the type of sand. The main construction tools used in building sand sculptures are shovels and buckets, though various people use only their hands. Sometimes other pieces of materials are used to reinforce the sculpture.

The Wonderland Beneath The Sea

Beneath the sea lies a wonderland – a dream world of which man had not much knowledge until the creation of the simple goggle, scuba gear (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus), flippers and the wet suit. Even the sprouting of wings could not have given man a more breathtaking entrance to another element than did the creation of the diving apparatus.
With such equipment man could glide down into the underwater wonderland of the soundless kingdom of fish and coral. Later developments allowed him to wonder virtually at will through the undersea forests of plants, the gardens of anemones, the beautiful shoals of fish and swim liberally in pleasant company with them in a cool world of crystal purity filled with surprises and countless delightful scenes and awesome things…

The World´s Largest Bird

The Ostrich is the world´s largest species of bird, and can only be found in parts of Africa. These enormous birds are unable to fly, however, for defense they rely mainly on speed – they have the ability to run at maximum speeds of approximately 72km/h. They possess a formidable kick which is powerful and can easily break a human leg. When in danger, ostriches will run away, kick or try to conceal by flopping flat against the ground. Though an ostrich has many strange habits, burying its head in the sand is not one of them. This myth probably arose from its practice; when sometimes lowering its head towards the ground in reaction to danger, or when using its beak to dig shallow nests in the sand and move its eggs around.

An ostrich lives for about 40 years. A well built male will reach a height between 1.8 and 2.8 meters and weighs as much as 155 kilograms. Though generally docile, the male is temperamental during breeding season. When agitated it typically uses hisses and other sounds such as roaring noises rather like a lion, displays its feathers, dances and bows before the hens. Pairs of birds often remain together for life. Hens lay clutches of about 20 eggs in most cases in hollows scooped out of the ground and the chicks hatch after about 35 to 45 days. The survival rate is low for the eggs, due to predators such as hyenas, jackals, wildcats and vultures. The eggs are incubated by the females during the day and by the males at night. The coloration of the two sexes are used to escape the detection of the nest, the grayish-brown female blends in with the sand, while the black male is nearly undetectable in the night. Parents are very protective; the male usually defends the hatchlings and teaches them to feed. Ostriches become sexually mature when they are about 2 to 4 years old.

Many years ago ostriches were hunted and farmed for their feathers which were just as alluring as diamonds and gold at that time. Feathers were popular for decoration in high fashionable clothing just before the World War I, to the fine ladies of London, Paris and New York. After the World War I, things were never the same again for the barons.
